读王昌楷先生的油画,总感到清新和亲切。
清新,是说他的画面清新,让人赏心悦目,真正的一个美的享受。
亲切,是说他入画的题材,都来源于我们生活的点点滴滴,或俗或雅,让人觉得亲切,仿佛自己也在画中,亦仿佛是自己看景观物察人而形成的画面。
我看过很多很多油画。只要出访,博物馆、艺术馆都是必去之所,由此见过不少大师名家的传世之作。即使在这样的背景下去看王昌楷的油画,也总是被它的特色与魅力吸引而流连忘返。
特色来自哪里?油画是西洋画种,王昌楷是中国画家。学习西方画艺而又融入中国画家的创新,于是,王昌楷的油画便有了自己的特色。
魅力来自哪里?油画是有数百年历史的古老画种,王昌楷作为当代画家,赋予古老艺术以时代内涵,让每一幅都留下鲜明的时代印迹。毋庸置疑,其油画也将自己的时空特色包容了进去。
并不是中国人画外国画、当代人画古老画种,自然就有特色,自然就有令人称羡的魅力。这关键取决于画家的画风。
画风,是我从学风一词引申而来,是指画家对绘画艺术的基本态度和创作作风。油画之为油画,是因为油画具有不同于其他画种的艺术风格。作为油画家,首先必须老老实实掌握并遵从油画的艺术特色,否则画出来的不叫油画。因此,大凡出色的中国油画家都潜心向西方学习、向古人讨教。
但是,油画和其他艺术一样,是开放的艺术,而不是封闭的艺术,是永恒发展的艺术,而不是故步自封的艺术。因此,大凡出色的中国油画家都是以创新赋予自己的作品以特色,以追随时代赋予自己的作品以生命。
王昌楷就是这样一个中国油画家。作为吴冠中先生的高徒,他喜欢说,外来艺术要为民族服务,传统艺术要推向现代化,当代艺术家要创造时代精神财富,使后人一看便知是21世纪的作品。在这个意义上,他喜欢重复老师的一句话:“笔墨等于零。”一味模仿外国和古人,没有出路。
从他的作品,我们可以看到他是这么说,也是这么做的。他继承了油画的优秀传统,为此他下过惊人的工夫,又以创新、以反映时代为己任,为此,他走出传统,走出画室,用一个“正”字诠释着他全部的画风。油画的生命,归根结底在画风。王昌楷先生以其对油画的热爱与执著,将艺术弘扬在继承与创新的完美结合中。

I always feel fresh and closed when appreciating oil paintings of Mr. Wang Changkai.
“Fresh” means that his paintings are fresh on the general picture, making people delightful, it's a true enjoy of beauty
“Closed” means that the subjects he pains about all come from our daily life, common or elegant, making people feel closed, as if themselves are in the paintings, or see the view with their own eyes.
I have seen many oil paintings. As long as there's a visit, museums and galleries are the places I must find, therefore I've seen posthumous works of many great masters. To see the paintings of Wang Changkai even on this background, I'm still fascinated by their character and charm.
Where the character come from? Oil painting is a western type of painting, Wang Changkai is a Chinese painter. Learning the art of western painting but also integrating innovation of a Chinese painter, therefore, Wang Changkai's oil painting has its own character.
Where the charm comes from? Oil painting is a ancient type of painting with hundreds years of history, Wang Changkai as a modern painter grant ancient art with content of times, mark every painting with clear print of times. No doubt its paintings also contain its own character of times.

“Painting style” is a word I referred from “study style”, means basic attitude a painter has to the art of painting and its working style. Oil painting differ itself from others with its unique art style. As a oil painter, one must prudently understand and follow the art character of oil painting, or else what it paints can't be called a painting. Therefore, every outstanding Chinese oil painter modestly studies from the west and from the ancient painters.
However, oil painting like other arts is an open art, not a closed art, it's an eternally developing art, not a stuffy art. Therefore, all the outstanding Chinese oil painters grant their works with characters and life of times.
Wang Changkai is such a Chinese oil painter. As a protégé of Mr. Wu Guanzhong, he likes to say that foreign art should serve the people, traditional art should be modernized, modern artiest should create assets of times spirits, make people in the future easily realize that they are works from the 21st century. In this sense, he likes to repeat a word of his teacher: “pen and ink are zero”, simply imitating foreign and ancient painters is pointless.
We can see from his works that he say it and do it too. He carries on the excellent tradition of oil painting, he made hard work for that, but also stick to the goal of innovation and reflection of times, for the purpose he walks out of tradition and his painting room, interpret all his painting style with a word of “upright”.The life of oil paintings lie in painting style. Mr. Wang Changkai reflects, with his love and persistence on oil painting, art in the perfect integration of succeeding and innovation.
