上海是中国近代印刷、出版和设计中心，《上海字记》以100件实物陈述了自传统书法以后，汉字书写和设计的百年历程。展览以年代为序，系统的、客观的、多样的为我们呈现近代汉字设计自1900年代起，由手工书写、雕刻、设计，运用石印、铅活字、胶印等印刷技术，以书籍、报刊、样本、广告为载体，在政治、经济、文化和日常生活中丰富的表现形式。我们相信，本次展览对当代汉字设计的创新、传播和教育将会起到积极的作用。

With a collection of 100 objects, Shanghai Typography records the development of the writing and designing of the Chinese characters after the decline of the traditional Chinese calligraphy over the course of 100 years in the city of Shanghai, historically the center of printing, publishing and design in modern China. Employing a systematic, objective and wide-ranging approach, the exhibition displays on a year-to-year basis how the Chinese characters were handwritten, engraved, designed and printed in lithography, lead type and offset lithography on books, newspapers, magazines, catalogs and advertisements for various purposes in politics, economic, culture and daily life. Hopefully this exhibition will benefit the innovation, communication and education of the contemporary design practices of the Chinese characters.
