Since its inception in 1991, Sean Kelly Gallery has been internationally regarded for its diverse, intellectually driven program and highly regarded roster of artists. The gallery has garnered international attention for its high calibre exhibition program and collaboration with many of the most significant cultural institutions around the world.
The gallery operated privately in SoHo until 1995, when its first public space opened at 43 Mercer Street. During these formative years, it established a reputation for diverse, intellectually driven, unconventional exhibitions. The original list of artists represented; Marina Abramović, James Casebere, Callum Innes, Joseph Kosuth and Julião Sarmento, all of whom are still with the gallery today, exemplified the Gallery’s commitment to presenting important and challenging contemporary art.
In 2001, Sean Kelly moved to a converted 7,000 square-foot industrial space on 29th Street in the Chelsea gallery district. The Gallery's roster of artists expanded to include such notable figures as Iran do Espírito Santo, Antony Gormley, Rebecca Horn and Frank Thiel. In the ensuing years, the Gallery undertook representation of Los Carpinteros, Leandro Erlich, Laurent Grasso, Johan Grimonprez, Tehching Hsieh, Peter Liversidge, Anthony McCall, Alec Soth and Kehinde Wiley.
In October 2012, Sean Kelly opened a new 22,000 square foot space at 475 Tenth Avenue in a historic 1914 building. Award-winning architect Toshiko Mori designed the two-story gallery, which opened with an exhibition of work by Antony Gormley. Toshiko Mori was awarded the AIA Design Award in Interiors for her unique architectural approach to the Hudson Yards location. With the gallery’s expansion into the new space, Sean Kelly added internationally acclaimed artists to its roster; David Claerbout, José Dávila, Candida Höfer, Ilse D’Hollander, Hugo McCloud, Mariko Mori, Liu Wei, James White and Sun Xun.
Sean Kelly has continued to expand its program to include a new generation of exceptional contemporary artists adding Julian Charrière, Landon Metz, Sam Moyer, Shahzia Sikander and Janaina Tschäpe. In January 2019, the gallery opened a project space in Taipei, Taiwan and looks forward to strengthening existing relationships while expanding the gallery’s growing presence in the region. As the Gallery continues to grow, its commitment to excellence and quality remains unwavering.

Marina Abramović was born in 1946 in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Since the beginning of her career in the early 1970s when she attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, Marina has pioneered the use of performance as a visual art form. The body has been both her subject and medium. Exploring the physical and mental limits of her being, she has withstood pain, exhaustion and danger in the quest for emotional and spiritual transformation. As a vital member of the generation of pioneering performance artists that includes Bruce Nauman, Vito Acconci and Chris Burden, Marina created some of the most historic early performance pieces and continues to make important durational works.

Alec Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Alec received international acclaim when his photographs were featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and São Paulo Biennials. Alec's photographic style has continued to develop in subsequent series beginning with his iconic Sleeping by the Mississippi, and including NIAGARA, The Last Days of W and Broken Manual. Alec uses his large format camera to photograph the people and landscapes of suburban and rural communities, often during road trips throughout the Midwest and the South. His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, to name a few. Alec is also a member of Magnum Photos.
Jose Dávila was born in Guadalajara, Mexico in 1974. For over a decade, Jose’s practice has explored spatial occupation and the transitory nature of physical structures. Drawing on his formal training as an architect, Jose creates sculptural installations and photographic works that simultaneously emulate, critique, and pay homage to 20th century avant-garde art and architecture. Referencing artists and architects from Luis Barragán and Mathias Goeritz to Donald Judd, Jose’s work investigates how the modernist movement has been translated, appropriated, and reinvented. Jose’s work is in the permanent collection of numerous institutions including, the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City, Mexico; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid, Spain; Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil; Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, New York; the Zabludowicz Collection, London, Great Britain; and the Museum of Modern Art, Luxembourg. Dávila was the winner of the 2014 EFG ArtNexus Latin America Art Award, has been the recipient of support from the Andy Warhol Foundation, a Kunstwerke residency in Berlin, and the National Grant for young artists by the Mexican Arts Council (FONCA) in 2000. The Getty Foundation has recently awarded the Los Angeles Nomadic Division a grant to develop a mid-career survey of Dávila’s work. Jose Dávila lives and works in Guadalajara, Mexico
Julian Charrière,born in Morges, Switzerland in 1987, currently lives and works in Berlin. A former student of Olafur Eliasson and participant of the Institut für Raumexperimente (Institute for Spatial Experiments), Charriére has exhibited his work – both individually and as a part of the Berlin-based art collective Das Numen – at museums and institutions worldwide. One of the most exciting young artists working today, Julian is known for a research-based practice rooted in geology, biology, physics, history and archaeology. He frequently travels to some of the most remote regions of the planet to explore how human civilization and the natural landscape are inextricably linked. Drawing on ideas about ephemerality, the passage of time, and humankind’s attempts to dominate the environment, his oeuvre incorporates extensive techniques and media, including photography, sculpture, video, intervention and installation.
Wu Chi-Tsung was born in 1981 in Taipei. Wu received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2004. He currently lives and works in Taipei, Taiwan and Berlin, Germany. His work, in which he devotes great attention to the methods used in producing and interpreting images, spans across different media, including photography, video, installation art, painting and set design. He combines traditions and contemporary art forms from the East and the West. Daily objects and phenomena are great inspiration for his work, what he transforms into poetic imagery. He received the top prize of the Taipei Arts Award (2003), short-listed for the “Artes Mundi” (2006), received “WRO Media Art Biannual” (2013) – Award of Critics and Editors of Art Magazines”, and short-listed for the “Prudential Eye Awards” (2015).
