Rain and mist hovers around Huangshan for about 240 days in the whole year. One should places himself in the midst of nature to experience and observe it unless it is stormy or snowy. From time to time, I arrive at those camera sites chosen before, taking a panoramic view of boundless sea of mist far and wide, hearing soughing of pines, lost in thinking as if I had been emerged into the surroundings. Photographing production requires serene mood and intense concentration of photographer. The picture conceived without outside interference can best reflect the tone and the thought of the photographer. In addition, it is able to refine spirit of art from those changeable scenery in nature. This recalls my memory of taking pictures in Huangshan in early spring of 1971 for the first time. At that time, drizzle and dense fog shrouded the North Sea. One day, I leaned against window after lunch, looking outside, idling away time aimlessly. Suddenly, a friend shouted downstairs:" The sky has cleared up, and the mist dispersed." Inspired immediately, I put on rented cottonpadded clothes, took an umbrella and a camera, and came to the gate of the hotel. The friend was not there, so I rushed out to the Beginning-to-Believe Peak all by myself. Rain was still falling down and dense fog hadn't disappeared completely. I was alone, only accompanied by green pines on the peak. At the place where stood a stone tablet carved with Hanjiangzi Sitting Alone, I was encircled by a haze of mist, only hearing the tickling sound of water drop condensed from mist and rain falling on my umbrella. One hour passed by, a breeze blew and dense fog was descending, blue sky and hills appeared partly. I took pictures of this beautiful scenery leisurely. However, it didn't last long. Mist curtain closed ten minutes later. After one more hour when it was close to 5:00 P.M., dense fog cleared away again. White clouds floated between the peaks of green mountains, which were under genial sunshine. I was so excited with the beautiful view in front of me: the Stalagmite Peak towered out of the clouds; the ingenious stone group of Immortals Playing Chess looked dainty and exquisite. Quickly, I captured the natural picture on the film.
I was so lucky that I encountered wonderful scenery the first time I took pictures in Huangshan. Having appreciated the great scenery both magnificent and pretty, I was fascinated by its imposing grandeur and marvellous wonder. From then on, I began my composition on Huangshan.
