Lecture outline

“事故、灾难、危机,当我们赖以生存的系统崩溃的时候,我们却会意外的意识到设计的力量。”[1]在面对危机、风险、灾难时,设计可以做什么?约翰·赫斯科特[2](John Heskett)在其著作《设计,无处不在》(Design: A Very Short Introduction)中写到:“设计从本质上可被定义为人类塑造自身环境的能力。我们通过各种非自然存在的方式改造环境,以满足我们的需要,并赋予生活以意义。” 设计与人类社会、城市生存、人类生存是无限性的关系。随着设计概念的不断扩大,设计面临的问题已经从设计自身危机扩展到全人类的危机上,要面对人类社会发展至今所产生的各种挑战和风险。本次讲座以危机主题的设计展为研究对象,从社会语境、文化视角、主题阐释、理论来源、批评话语、视觉传播、空间叙事、设计系统建构等方面来聚焦策展语法与实践,探讨如何以策展作为对危机的创造性回应,以及这一过程中设计所迸发出的价值与力量。

“Accidents, disasters, crises, when systems fail we become temporarily conscious of the extraordinary force and power of design” (Bruce Mau). What can design do in the face of crises, risks and disasters? In his book Design: A Very Short Introduction, John Heskett writes: “Design, stripped to its essence, can be defined as the human capacity to shape and make our environment in ways without precedent in nature, to serve our needs and give meaning to our lives”. The relationship between design and human society, urban survival and human survival is infinite. With the continuous expansion of the concept of design, the problems faced by design have expanded from the crisis of design itself to the crisis of mankind, and we have to face all kinds of challenges and risks arising from the development of human society up to now. This lecture takes the crisis-themed design exhibition as the research object, from the perspective of social context, cultural viewpoint, theme interpretation, theoretical sources, critical discourse, visual communication, spatial narrative, design system construction and so on to focus on the curatorial grammar and practice to explore how to to take curation as a creative response to the crisis, and the bursting value and power of design in this process.

John Heskett, a professor at school of design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and an internationally renowned design critic. He is the author of Industrial Design (1980), Philips: A Study of the Corporate Management of Design (1989), etc. He has published articles and papers in many magazines and collections, and is a regular contributor to The International Design Magazine.

About the lecturer

纪玉洁
中央美术学院展览策划与视觉传播博士、中央美术学院美术馆设计部主任/总监、中央美术学院美术博物馆虚拟策展实验室设计顾问,长期从事展览设计实践与当代设计展策展研究,著有《变革与趋向——1970年代以来的设计展策展研究》。

Ji Yujie
PhD of Curatorial and Communication, Central Academy of Fine Arts,Design Director of Art Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts,Design Consultant of the Visual Lab for Art Museum of Central Academy of Fine Arts. She has long been engaged in exhibition design practice and curatorial research of contemporary design exhibition, and is the author of Transformation and Trends: Curatorial Research of Design Exhibition since the 1970s.
