June 11 marks the 83rd anniversary of the first appearance of Mandrake the Magician, who is regarded by comic historians as the first comic superhero. Created by Lee Falk, Mandrake began publication on June 11, 1934. Phil Davis soon took over as the comic strip's illustrator, while Falk continued to write the script. Mandrake's super power was his ability to “make people believe anything, simply by gesturing hypnotically.” At various times in the comic strip, Mandrake also demonstrated other powers, including turning invisible, shapeshifting, levitation, and teleportation.
