Robinson Crusoe

Lin Ke found an image of an island from an online search of the keyword "island". The artist used this picture for his computer desktop and named his hard-drive as Robinson Crusoe. Meanwhile, he dragged the Robinson Crusoe hard-drive icon and recorded this process. This computer-operated performance was named Robinson Crusoe and was later uploaded to Youku (The Chinese version of YouTube). The original purpose to upload this video was to test whether the Youku website would accept HD videos.

Two years later, Lin Ke found out this video had a large number of hits, and many viewers left him negative comments on the page. Just then, Lin Ke realized that Robinson Crusoe is the name of a famous person, and many online surfers found this video through a keyword search for Robinson Crusoe. This outcome was completely beyond Lin’s expectations. Later, this video was accepted in the art world and became one of Lin Ke’s important works.

This is Lin Ke’s first attempt to adopt the operator interfaces for a screen performance. Lin created a folder called universe in his computer, and then added various types of common knowledge about the universe into this folder. When Lin opens this universe folder, the viewers would be able to witness Lin’s conscience wanders through this universe.

Traditional Romance is a classic song. In an afternoon, as Lin Ke worked with the Photoshop software, this song played continuously on his computer. Caught by the tunes of the song, Lin found himself singing along while he swung his hand to the rhythm. As an artist, Lin realized that the performance has started, so he immediately pressed on the recording button. This is Lin’s Traditional Romance.

One day, Lin Ke spent the night at a friend's home. His friend bought a new iMac. This computer has a higher resolution than Lin's laptop, so he came up with an idea of recording an HD version of his Star Travel series. This became Lin’s Star Travel 1080p. With this version, you can also hear the sound of the new Apple mouse sliding on the desktop.

One day, the founder of the art video company Action Media--Qian Long was making an artist documentary for Lin Ke. Qian wanted some image of Lin working on his computer since the computer is the most crucial media for Lin to make artworks. So Lin opened a random image in his computer and started to operate it quickly and aimlessly. At the time, Lin’s computer was playing electronic music, so he followed the rhythm of the music. This is Lin’s Washing Hands.

“At that time, my studio was in a high-rise apartment along the riverside. It had a panoramic view so that I could enjoy the sunrise and sunset every day. Maybe this view had an influence on me, so I made this video.”

                                                                      --Lin Ke

Lin Ke recorded this video in 2011. At the time, the Great Firewall of China was yet to be as powerful as it has become today. Lin Ke lived in Hangzhou, the city that gave birth to Internet companies, such as Alibaba. The internet speed in Hangzhou was also very fast. One day, Lin realized that the online GIF images were linked by keywords. He clicked around different pages about these keywords, and he realized the page forwarding fit perfectly with the rhythm of the music he was listening to. So, he listened to music while browsing the pages randomly. It's like a music video.

“But they realized it's a trap, like narcotics. Because when the dreams become more important than the reality you would give up travel, building, creating. You would even forget how to repair the machines left behind by your ancestors. You just sit there, and live in the thoughts of others, where you probe the ideas of the zoological samples, like me.”

This phrase was part of a monologue Lin Ke has drawn from the film Star Trek: The Original Series. Lin is very surprised how a line in film from the 1960s’ science fiction is able to describe the present world perfectly, just like Lin himself sitting in front of the computer slowly faded away from the natural world. Lin Ke copied this line and saved it to his computer. One day, Lin had the idea of becoming a rapper but had no lyrics. Then, he found this line and began to read it.

Lin Ke (b.1984, Wenzhou, China) graduated from the New Media Art Department of the China Academy of Art in 2008, and currently lives and works in Shanghai. Lin Ke has gained major critical acclaim for his work winning the OCAT - Pierre Huber Art Prize in 2014, and the Chinese Youth Artist Award of the 9th AAC Art 2015. In 2017, he was nominated for the 11th AAC Art of the Chinese Youth Artist Award for the year and the BMW Art Journey at Art Basel Hong Kong. He is also one of the founding members of Artgroup The Double Fly Art Center.

Since 2010, Lin Ke has shifted his attention to performance art in computer age by making himself his own Guinea pig. Converting his laptop into a studio, Lin extracts material from computer software and the Internet as the fodder and form of his art. The mundane act of exploring the vicissitudes of the world wide web and various applications becomes the catalyst for art making and self-portraiture. He records operational behavior and conceptual images by using screenshots and screen recording software. His work takes the form of installation, image, sound, text, video and computer painting. His work has been shown at OCAT Contemporary Art Terminal, ZKM (Karlsruhe), Museum Folkwang (Essen), Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (Tokyo), Shanghai Minsheng art museum, the Power Station of Art, He Xiangning Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) (Manchester) and other institutions.
