Charles Ward Chappelle (1872-1941), was an aviation pioneer, electrical engineer and an international businessman.

One of eighteen children born to religious parents in rural Georgia, he studied at Morris Brown University in Atlanta, Georgia and with several correspondence schools to gain an education.

He worked briefly as a school teacher in Georgia and later became the first head electrician of U.S. Steel before forming the African Union Company, Inc.

As an aviation pioneer, C.W. Chappelle designed a long distance airplane and won a medal for his invention in the 1911 First Industrial Airplane Show in New York City.
