　　文本中的186幅版画，1982至2018年，贯穿了几乎方力钧版画创作直至今日的各个阶段。但这不是回顾。也不是按照某种预设的主题或关联性的设置或者安排。出现在这里仅仅是因为恰好就在这里。

　　每一个时期的作品既可以按照艺术史论的学科范式，籍描述性，解释性和规范性的方法阐释。也可以用形式主义，图像志分析，艺术社会学，结构主义，符号学和后结构主义的学术工具建构或者解构创作或者作品的意义与认识。对于史论家们这只是“基本技术”，就像“手艺”之于艺术家。

　　但是，对于方力钧这样的事实上已经获得了巨大成就的艺术家而言，艺术史理论在既有的范畴和经验中的分析和研究是失效的。现有的艺术理论工具并不能提供对这种现象级艺术家更有创见性的解释。

　　事实上，从20世纪以来，自律的艺术史家就不再为他们同时代的艺术家安排在艺术史中的位置。而且通常也不会去撰写一部直至今日的完整艺术史。因为今天的艺术史对于未来的艺术史在某种意义上就像炼金术与现代化学。艺术史论家们不再是真理在握的指引者或者艺术的权威阐释者，而只是与艺术家一道探索和发现更多可能性的人。

　　在这里我们无以言说，我们无意重复“已有的文本”。让作品“直言”，我们紧随其后。

　　From 1982 to 2018, Fang Lijun has created all together 186 woodcut prints in different phases of his art career. Now you are expecting me to call this article a retrospect of Fang's art career. But you would be wrong. It's neither a retrospect nor a project related to a certain theme. They are presented here just because they happen to be here.

　　Every phase of his career can be explained with theories of Art History, and be analyzed from various perspectives, such as formalism, iconography, sociology of art, structuralism, semiotics and etc. For art historians, these are just "basic techniques". Just as "craftsmanship" is to artists.

　　Yet in terms of dissecting works of an artist who has already gained recognition home and abroad, theories of art history is to some extent useless. Existing theories can hardly offer any creative description of a phenomenon artist like Fang Lijun.

　　Actually, autonomic art historians no longer try to define their contemporary artists since the 20th century. They probably would leave the job of updating art history to art historians of the next generation. Because current art history is to future art history what alchemy is to modern chemistry. Art historians nowadays are art explorers, together with artists, in the worlds of possibilities rather than guiders or authoritativeinterpreters of art.

　　We have no intention to repeat those stock statements. Just let the works speak for themselves. The only thing we should do is to follow closely.

　　Xiang Qun is the father of Fang Lijun's schoolmate, Kou Kejuan. Fang happen to meet Xiang's woodcut prints in 1982. That's the very first woodcut Fang had ever seen. He turned to woodcut ever since then.
