Curator's Statement:
“Mist, Undercurrents, and Golden Mirror” rejects the notion of art as consolation. It tears open the facade of golden Zen-like tranquility, exposing the surging absence beneath. It shatters the myth of the ethereal dreamscape of ink wash, revealing the scars of reality. Here, the viewer is no longer a mere observer of beauty but an accomplice within the structure of desire—every gaze becomes both a confirmation and a provocation of the soul.

“Mist” is a forest of consciousness drifting between wakefulness and semi-awareness. In the ink-outlined misty forest, brushstrokes entangle like vines and intertwine like shadows of trees, spreading across the texture of rice paper to form a pathless expanse. The blending of smoky shadows does not obscure but rather reveals a deeper truth—objects lose their rigid contours and return to a primordial state of interconnectedness and mutual permeation.

“Undercurrents” represent the “perpetual motion” of existence—the non-teleological, endless surging, becoming, and flux of life itself. What we witness is this primal, untamed vitality: in the fusion of ink and water, the division of cells, the gathering and dispersion of nebulae, and the ceaseless turbulence of consciousness itself are enacted. It is the eternal cycle from which all forms emerge and into which they ultimately dissolve.

Yet the “Golden Mirror”, like a Zen koan, reflects the limitations of perception, much like the “Precious Mirror of Romance” in “Dream of the Red Chamber” . Here, the “Golden Mirror” also possesses a dual nature. On its meticulously crafted front, it offers a path to metaphysical, radiant splendor. But if one circles to its back, it may resemble a rockery—revealing the mysterious shadows of its structure. What it mirrors is precisely our attempt to confine mist-like, surging life into desire-laden symbols of spectacle.

We use the “Golden Mirror” to confirm the existence of “Undercurrents,” and with each alternation of the “Golden Mirror,” like the “Mist,” we are cast back into that more authentic, more primordial state of life.
