Louise Bourgeois’ interest in hysteria as a form of embodied self-expression runs through her psychoanalytically informed work, as the piece Arch of Hysteria demonstrates. Yet her aesthetic reference to this psycho-somatic disturbance, or rather articulation of dis-esase, is as concerned with the sense of loss and abandonment, on which, according to her, artistic creativity is predicated, as it is concerned with sexual desire and satisfaction.
The cells – conceived as portraits – on which this lecture will focus, perform scenes of an ambivalent entrapment in the textures of family relationships, which Bourgeois incessantly draws on in her work. They critique these entanglements in search of a process of reconciliation, which can, however, only be thought of as achievable but never fully to be realized. And it is precisely this open-ended battle with, and against, the trauma of the family that emerges as a fundamental aspect of her aesthetic appropriation of the language of hysteria. The moment of suspension, and suspense which Bourgeois’ cells encapsulate, capture recuperation as a possibility that overcomes even as it sustains personal discontent.
